Create Upstate

Create Upstate is a semi-annual design conference bringing designers of all skill levels and backgrounds together in Upstate New York. I’ve been involved in the event since its inception. Working closely with other co-organizers, I’ve planned, managed logistics, and created design work for each event. This page includes work samples from the 2017 and 2016 events.

Ithaca 2017

Create Upstate 2017 was our most ambitious event. Taking place in Ithaca, NY, the event consisted of two full days of talks, workshops, food trucks and live music.

For the 2017 event, I designed a unique website that highlighted speakers, event schedules, information for attendees, and registration. I created an iconic illustration of Ithaca to serve as the primary imagery for the website and introduced a vibrant color palette to align with the new logo for the 2017 event.

Beyond the website, I designed the stage signage and props to play off of the Ithaca illustration from the website and built many 3-dimensional elements to add life to the stage. I also developed the program as a guide for attendees to experience the event and included local information and an illustrated map to help them find their way around. This event also featured live poster screenprinting and I created one of the three designs. Create Upstate 2017 was incredibly successful and the work I and the other co-organizers put into it guaranteed that it was a successful event.

Syracuse 2016

In 2016, Create Upstate took place in Syracuse, NY. For this event we had speakers, workshops, a collaborative mural, and live t-shirt screenprinting.

I designed unique signage for each area code of Upstate NY, expanded the Create Upstate brand, and created two of the screenprinted t-shirt designs.

I also developed and led an event we called "Cropped," a design battle where teams were given a canvas and materials and challenged to work together to create artwork that represented "The future of design."
